Chapter Six

Finn was definitely a bit shocked. He didn’t think that his father’s first meeting with his mate would end up quite like this.

“So you’re telling me that you’re a crown prince?” Aiden asked, his fingers clasped together as he sat back against his desk chair. Kahlil was standing in front of him, his face turned to the ground, as he nodded slowly.

There, inside the alpha’s main receiving room and office, Finn stood right beside Kahlil, and both Elijah and Zachary were seated in the chairs to one side. Aiden sat behind his huge, wooden desk made from the finest of mahogany. The entirety of the room, much like the rest of the house, had the vibe of the old meeting the new. Antique-looking furniture meshed well with the huge, tinted windows that looked more at home on a modern house. Not to mention the number of books that surrounded them and the velvet carpet with the gold trim that looked more at home in a house in Regency-era England.

Aiden clasped his fingers together and peered straight at Kahlil with pinpoint precision.

“Well, technically, I am only twelfth in line. I have eleven brothers from our four different mothers, and three more after me, so I am nowhere near the crown.” Kahlil replied. “I was exiled because of my proclivity toward men.”

Finn could feel the embarrassment coming out of his mate like the smell of rotten fish in the air. He definitely didn’t like seeing his mate this unhappy, but it wasn’t in his place to interrupt when his father and his mate were simply having a civil discussion.

Earlier, when Kahlil had been nervous, Finn could understand why. Kahlil being nervous was natural. After all, Kahlil still wasn’t used to the fact that packs, prides, or any community of shifters worked like theirs. Not to mention the fact that he understood, from many years of listening to the people in his pack, that his father, being an alpha, did have a certain natural aura of dominance that made people scared around him. It wasn’t anything to do with his father’s personality—which Finn knew could be very silly, indeed—but rather the fact that his father didn’t look like an easy person to approach at all.

But seeing Kahlil embarrassed of his own situation in life made a pang of pain ebb in Finn’s heart. He frowned and crossed his arms. He definitely didn’t like seeing that, but what kind of wolf shifter wanted their mates to suffer?

“That’s not anything to be ashamed about. If you had to put labels on things, all shifters would probably be bisexual or pansexual. You can’t stop being who you are just as much as we can’t stop being who we are.” Aiden shrugged. “I don’t get why you’d have to be exiled for that, but it’s not in my place to judge another person’s culture. What I am here to do is to make sure that a member of my pack feels safe from outside harm.”

Finn could see his mate visibly sigh in relief.
